East Hospital has admitted 953 patients affected by the war in Ukraine so far
Today, on 16 July 2026, the Riga East University Hospital (East Hospital) once again joins forces with the charity project M-Help.com – this day marks the 40th arrival of severely injured Ukrainian soldiers in the war started by Russia. 23 injured Ukrainian soldiers have made the long journey to Latvia’s largest hospital this time. However, since the outbreak of the war, East Hospital has already admitted 953 patients brought from Ukraine.
The bus carrying Ukrainian soldiers was received by Danylo Kindrys, First Secretary of the Embassy of Ukraine in the Republic of Latvia, and a medical team from East Hospital’s Emergency Medicine and Patient Admission Clinic (EMPAC), including Aleksejs Višņakovs, Ričards Genādijs Rusanovs, Inese Larionova, and various specialists and nursing staff.
All patients arriving from Ukraine underwent a thorough health evaluation at the EMPAC, including various laboratory tests and the examination for the possible presence of multidrug-resistant infections, as they can rapidly emerge and spread in wartime conditions. Several injured patients underwent additional radiological examinations by specialists in the Emergency Radiology Department to determine the specifics of their injuries.
Meanwhile, other patients will be transferred to other healthcare and rehabilitation facilities in Latvia, depending on the nature of their injuries, after being examined at the EMPAC.
After the initial health assessment, one patient will continue complex, long-term treatment at the Trauma and Orthopaedics Hospital, while four patients will be transferred to the Vaivari National Rehabilitation Centre, six patients – to the Līgatne Rehabilitation Centre, and 12 patients – to the Jaunķemeri National Rehabilitation Centre.
Treating war-injured patients is a collective effort, involving physicians from many different specialties, such as traumatologists, surgeons, microsurgeons, infectious disease specialists, physical and rehabilitation medicine physicians, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, radiologists, and laboratory specialists.
It is the private initiative by the founders of the charity project M-Help.com, Arvis Rekets and Mārtiņš Medinieks, that made it possible to transport the patients affected by the war in Ukraine to East Hospital.
East Hospital conveys its gratitude to the M-Help.com charity project, the Embassy of Ukraine in Latvia, and all medical and rehabilitation institutions across Latvia engaged in the care and rehabilitation of patients injured in the war in Ukraine.
