Applications for research are reviewed and coordinated by the Specialist in Academic Research Affairs of the Research Department.

It is recommended that the application and research protocol be coordinated in advance by sending them by e-mail to zinatne@aslimnica.lv.

The Research Department is located on the 2nd floor of the inpatient unit “Gaiļezers”, room 18a, office 2, telephone numbers: 26642236 or 67303179.

To obtain authorisation to conduct research at Rīgas Austrumu klīniskā universitātes slimnīca, the following documents must be submitted to the Research Department:

1. Application for conducting an academic research study (original document required; electronic signature is permitted and recommended):

The application shall be completed electronically and signed by the applicant and the scientific supervisor of the study. If the applicant or the scientific supervisor is not an employee of the Hospital, the application must also be signed by the Hospital’s responsible contact person, who assumes responsibility for the conduct of the research at the Hospital, including familiarisation of the research personnel involved with the internal regulations of the respective structural unit and other binding documents.

2. Research protocol (including the title of the study, list of investigators, study aim, and a detailed section on Materials and Methods).

3. Signed original confidentiality declaration (electronic signature is permitted and recommended).

4. Patient information and consent form, if applicable.

Regulatory excerpt
The requirements for conducting research at the Hospital are defined by the “Regulations on the Implementation of Research” (Board Decision No. V1/01-01/25-168 of 10 July 2025).

Academic research includes fundamental and applied studies aimed at generating new knowledge, skills and technological insights related to education and healthcare processes, which may also have no direct connection with immediate industrial or commercial application. These include:

  • Educational process research;

  • Research programme or project studies;

  • Epidemiological studies;

  • Registries and similar activities that fall outside the scope of Cabinet Regulation No. 192 of 26 March 2024 “Regulations Regarding Clinical Trials of Medicinal Products for Human Use” and Cabinet Regulation No. 455 of 15 August 2023 “Procedures for Conducting Clinical Trials of Medicinal Products for Human Use and Performance Studies of In Vitro Diagnostic Medical Devices”.

If the study is funded by any of the following sources, the research may be initiated only after signing a contract with the Hospital:

  1. Direct funding from EU programmes and projects (H2020 and successor framework programmes, cross-border programmes, projects administered by VIAA, CFLA, LIAA, etc.);

  2. Direct state funding (VPP, Latvian Science Council, state institutions, programmes administered by VIAA, CFLA, LIAA, etc.);

  3. Funding received through research organisations (including projects whose primary financial source is mentioned in the previous two points);

  4. Funding from other legal entities.
