Professor J. O. R. Sønksen, an international authority in urology treatment and research, is visiting Latvia at the invitation of the Riga East Hospital
At the invitation of the Riga East University Hospital (Riga East Hospital), Jens Otto Reimers Sønksen, an international expert from Denmark, who represents the Urology Clinic of Herlev and Gentofte Hospital in Copenhagen and is also a board member and executive director of the European Association of Urology (EAU), came to Latvia for a two-day visit. The purpose of the Professor’s visit is to share knowledge and experience about healthcare options and experiences in Denmark, as well as interest in the care of urological patients at the Riga East Hospital. Professor met with the Board of Directors of the Riga East Hospital, medical and nursing lead specialists, and he was introduced to the technology and treatment conditions at the Clinic of Urology and Oncological Urology, expressing his satisfaction with the strategic move towards establishing a centre of excellence for urological patients at the Riga East Hospital. On 6 August, Professor J. O. R. Senksen is scheduled to meet with the Minister of Health, Hosam Abu Meri.
Professor J. O. R. Senksen will visit Latvia and the Riga East Hospital for two days – on 5 and 6 August. On Monday, 5 August, the professor met with the management of the Riga East Hospital, leading specialists and doctors of the Clinic of Urology and Oncological Urology, got acquainted with the care and treatment options for urological patients, as well as the use of technology in the treatment of patients at the clinic. He shared his experience from the urology clinic at Herlev and Gentofte Hospital in Denmark and welcomed the strategic move towards establishing a centre of excellence for urology patients at the Riga East Hospital. According to J. O. R. Senksen, the treatment and care of patients at the Clinic of Urology and Oncological Urology of the Riga East Hospital is based on medical guidelines, similar to those of leading European clinics.
Professor J. O. R. Senksen mentioned during his visit: “15 years ago, when I looked at the Riga East Hospital, I saw a rapid progress towards growth, but today, being here, I am pleased to see the fruits of the hospital’s progress. You have been able to move towards your goals step by step. I see the Riga East Hospital as a good example of a system that works. It is crucial to strengthen networking and international cooperation to gain inspiration, valuable insights, and knowledge that will help us achieve better results and continually improve patient treatment and care.”
Normunds Stanevičs, Chairman of the Board of the Riga East Hospital, said: “Our biggest responsibility is to create a future platform for the development strategy of the Riga East Hospital for the next five years. There are many good things we can do to improve treatment processes and thus contribute to public health. While we recognize that the journey is long and filled with challenges, we have a clear goal and direction. We are committed to collaboration and bringing international best practices to patient care at the Riga East Hospital.”
During his visit to the Riga East Hospital, the professor shared his knowledge and experience by giving lectures on relevant and important topics, presenting the healthcare system in Denmark, in the Capital Region; the activities of the Urological Research Institute at Herlev and Gentofte Hospital, Copenhagen; and the current developments of the European Urological Association and opportunities to improve the care of urological patients.
During his visit to Latvia on 6 August, professor will also meet with Hosams Abu Meri, Latvian Minister of Health, to discuss critical issues in improving the treatment of urological patients:
- the role of robotic surgery in urology – benefits of widespread use, challenges of implementing robot-assisted surgery in practice. the experience of Herlev and Gentof hospitals;
- opportunities to participate in EU-funded projects aimed at improving urological care, joint research initiatives and exchange training programmes;
- the role and influence of the EAU in urological health policy-making in the EU member states, health authorities and the European Commission.
Professor J. O. R. Senksen is the EAU’s Executive Director and also its Board member. In his home country of Denmark, he is head of the Herlev and Gentofte Scientific Institute of Urology and a consultant at the Urology Clinic of Herlev and Gentofte Hospital. He is Professor at the University of Copenhagen and Editor-in-Chief of “European Urology Today.” The EAU brings together leading urologists, and its mission is to promote the highest standards of treatment and medical technology in urological care in Europe and worldwide.
The Clinic of Urology and Oncological Urology of the Riga East Hospital is the leading urology clinic in the country, established in 2009 and celebrating its 15th anniversary this year. The Clinic of Urology and Oncological Urology is a training base for students and young doctors – urologists, surgeons, gynaecologists, traumatologists, dermatologists, general practitioners. During these years, 19 young urologists have completed their residency studies and become specialists. Doctors of the clinic participate in academic and market-oriented research, introducing new diagnostic and treatment methods into everyday practice in order to provide Latvian patients with treatment recognised by the leading European clinics.
