East Hospital continues to support Ukrainian soldiers: 332 severely injured patients were admitted in 2025

Riga East Clinical University Hospital (East Hospital) continues to support severely injured soldiers and civilians from Ukraine. In 2025 alone, 332 injured patients from Ukraine were admitted to East Hospital, raising the overall number of patients treated since the summer of 2022 to 748. Today, on 18 December 2025, East Hospital received injured patients from Ukraine for the 33rd time, in cooperation with the charity project M-Help.com.

The bus carrying 29 injured Ukrainian soldiers was received by the East Hospital’s medical team, including the Medical Director, Juris Nikolajenko, and the representatives from the Embassy of Ukraine in the Republic of Latvia, Dmytro Kindrys and Natalia Bereza.

As usual, patients were admitted to East Hospital by a multi-disciplinary medical team comprised by various specialists and nursing staff from the Emergency Medicine and Patient Admission Clinic (EMPAC).

“The three years of war have shown that solidarity in healthcare means taking real action. Medical staff at East Hospital continue their dedicated support for those affected in Ukraine, ensuring safe admission and professional treatment. Even at the end of the year, it is important for us to maintain this responsibility and a clear awareness that providing assistance to people in wartime constitutes an inseparable part of our mission as a university hospital,” points out Professor Haralds Plaudis, Chairman of the Board of East Hospital.

All patients arriving from Ukraine underwent a thorough health evaluation at the EMPAC, including various laboratory tests and the examination for the possible presence of multidrug-resistant infections, as they can rapidly emerge and spread in wartime conditions. Several injured patients underwent additional radiological examinations by specialists in the Emergency Radiology Department to determine the specifics of their injuries.

One patient will continue treatment at the Trauma and Orthopaedics Clinic of East Hospital under the care of trauma and orthopaedic surgeon Kristiāna Alpe, after being examined at the EMPAC. Meanwhile, other patients will be transferred to other healthcare facilities in Latvia, depending on the nature of their injuries. 17 patients will be transported to the Jaunķemeri Rehabilitation Centre, eight patients to the Vaivari National Rehabilitation Centre, while three other patients will be transferred to the Līgatne Rehabilitation Centre.

It is the private initiative by the founders of the charity project M-Help.com, Arvis Rekets and Mārtiņš Medinieks, that made it possible to transport the patients affected by the war in Ukraine to East Hospital. Meanwhile, the Georgy Logvinsky Charity Foundation in Ukraine has equipped and renovated a bus used for the transportation of these patients.
