Professor Sandra Lejniece, Head of the Haematology Clinic at Riga East University Hospital (East Hospital), Professor at Riga Stradiņš University (RSU), academician of the Latvian Academy of Sciences, and President of the Latvian Haematologists’ Association has been awarded one of the highest European Union distinctions – the European Order of Merit. RSU professor Sandra Lejniece was awarded the order for her significant contribution to medicine, particularly in treating cancer and haematologic diseases, and for her pivotal role in implementing the Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan in Latvia.

Vadims Beļuns, Chairman of the Board of Riga East University Hospital, emphasizes that this award is significant not only for the professor herself but also for the entire Latvian medical community. “Professor Sandra Lejniece has been one of Latvia’s leading haematologists for many years, contributing significantly to the development of modern patient care and strengthening Latvia’s medical reputation at international level. We are immensely proud to have such an outstanding physician and scientist at East Hospital,” says V. Beļuns.

At Riga East University Hospital, she has contributed significantly to the development of modern oncological and haematological patient care in Latvia, including the introduction of new treatment approaches and the strengthening of specialised haematology care.
RSU professor was nominated for the award by the Speaker of the Saeima, Daiga Mieriņa, who recognised her long-standing and significant contribution to medicine and the development of healthcare in Latvia. The application states that the professor’s efforts demonstrate Latvia’s ability to be a valued partner in European healthcare by implementing innovative treatment approaches, advocating for patient rights, and upholding shared European values.
The European Order of Merit was launched on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the Schuman Declaration – the starting point of European unity. It is the first European distinction of its kind granted by EU institutions to honour the achievements of individuals who have made a significant contribution to European integration and defend democracy, peace, and human dignity.
