Professor Sandra Lejniece, Head of the Haematology Clinic at Riga East University Hospital (East Hospital), Professor at Riga Stradi\u0146\u0161 University (RSU), academician of the Latvian Academy of Sciences, and President of the Latvian Haematologists\u2019 Association has been awarded one of the highest European Union distinctions\u00a0\u2013 the European Order of Merit. This prestigious award was presented for the first time this year to honour the achievements of individuals who have made a significant contribution to the development of Europe and the strengthening of democracy and social welfare. RSU professor Sandra Lejniece was awarded the order for her significant contribution to medicine, particularly in treating cancer and haematologic diseases, and for her pivotal role in implementing the Europe\u2019s Beating Cancer Plan in Latvia.<\/strong><\/p>\n

RSU professor Sandra Lejniece has been one of the leading haematology specialists in Latvia for more than three decades, focusing on patient care, scientific research, training of young physicians, and the development of international collaboration. At Riga East University Hospital, she has contributed significantly to the development of modern oncological and haematological patient care in Latvia, including the introduction of new treatment approaches and the strengthening of specialised haematology care.<\/p>\n

RSU professor was nominated for the award by the Speaker of the Saeima<\/em>, Daiga Mieri\u0146a, who recognised her long-standing and significant contribution to medicine and the development of healthcare in Latvia. The application states that the professor\u2019s efforts demonstrate Latvia\u2019s ability to be a valued partner in European healthcare by implementing innovative treatment approaches, advocating for patient rights, and upholding shared European values.<\/p>\n

The European Order of Merit was launched on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the Schuman Declaration\u00a0\u2013 the starting point of European unity. It is the first European distinction of its kind granted by EU institutions to honour the achievements of individuals who have made a significant contribution to European integration and defend democracy, peace, and human dignity.<\/p>\n

About the East Hospital\u00a0 <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Riga East University Hospital is the largest and strategically significant multi-profile hospital in the country. The hospital consists of five inpatient facilities\u00a0\u2013 Gai\u013cezers, Latvian Oncology Centre, Bi\u0137ernieki, Tuberculosis and Lung Disease Centre, and Latvian Infectious Diseases Centre, along with various specialised centres and clinics.
