To facilitate an early start to the reconstruction of the Latvian Oncology Centre (LOC) of Riga East Clinical University Hospital (East Hospital), extensive departmental relocations are to take place over the next few months, gradually relocating the departments to the renovated and modernised facilities of Block\u00a09 at Gai\u013cezers Inpatient Facility. During the LOC reconstruction, East Hospital will ensure full continuity of patient treatment and care, including all services\u00a0\u2013 consultations, examinations, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and inpatient treatment. Several other medical units of East Hospital will also be relocated to the renovated facilities, first of them being the Gynaecology Clinic, which will be located on the 9th floor of Block\u00a09 at Gai\u013cezers Inpatient Facility as of 5\u00a0December\u00a02025.<\/strong><\/p>\n

During the reconstruction of LOC, the unique needs of oncology patients remain a top priority. All processes will be arranged to ensure that any impact on patients\u2019 day-to-day experience is kept to a minimum. During the departmental relocation, special attention will be given to patient safety and the continuity of treatment. Patients will receive individual notifications regarding the exact schedule and procedure for the relocation of each department. Updated information for family members will be available through the hospital\u2019s information channels.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Other medical units that were temporarily accommodated in other hospital facilities during the reconstruction will also be relocated to the renovated facilities at Gai\u013cezers Inpatient Facility. The following departments will be relocated by the end of 2025<\/strong>: on 5\u00a0December, the Gynaecology Clinic<\/strong> will be relocated to 9th\u00a0floor of Block\u00a09<\/strong> at Gai\u013cezers Inpatient Facility<\/strong>, and visits for relatives in the new premises will be allowed from 17:00 on the same day;\u00a0<\/strong>from 9\u00a0December, the Intensive Care Unit\u00a04<\/strong> will start operating on the 1st\u00a0floor of Block\u00a010<\/strong>, while from 15\u00a0December, the Day Surgery Unit<\/strong> will expand its services to also operate on the 2nd floor of Block\u00a010<\/strong>. Other departments will relocate after the New Year\u00a0\u2013 at the beginning of 2026. Detailed information will follow.<\/p>\n

\u201cWith the reconstruction of Latvian Oncology Centre approaching, the East Hospital took early steps to ensure smooth and safe relocation of departments and patients to the renovated Block\u00a09 of Gai\u013cezers Inpatient Facility. We are well aware that such changes can be unsettling, so we are placing particular emphasis on uninterrupted treatment and care throughout the process, and on ensuring that patients and their families always have clear access to information and assistance. The reconstruction is extensive and will take around two years, but it is urgently necessary to ensure that, in the near future, treatment and care can be provided in facilities that meet modern medical standards and patients\u2019 needs. LOC was commissioned in 1984, so it no longer meets the current standards for treatment, safety, flow organisation, engineering systems, and European oncology care. The reconstruction seeks to provide oncology patients, within the next few years, with a 21st-century standard environment that is modern, safe, and comfortable. The reconstruction will cover the entire building\u00a0– 10\u00a0floors with an area of more than 23,000\u00a0m2<\/sup>, and it will take place gradually. The renovated facilities will offer modern patient rooms and procedure rooms, enhanced infection control and ventilation systems, new equipment, infrastructure supporting modern technologies, and improved working conditions for the staff.<\/p>\n

Information on the LOC reconstruction, departmental relocation schedules and department locations will be available on the hospital\u2019s website (https:\/\/aslimnica.lv\/latvijas-onkologijas-centra-parbuve\/<\/a>) and social media, and on information boards and customer service points at the Latvian Oncology Centre and Gai\u013cezers Inpatient Facility. To better support patients and their families, a unified telephone line will be launched in January\u00a02026, providing assistance around the clock, seven days a week.<\/p>\n

About the East Hospital\u00a0 <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Riga East Clinical University Hospital is the largest and strategically significant multi-profile hospital in the country. The hospital consists of five inpatient facilities\u00a0\u2013 Gai\u013cezers, Latvian Oncology Centre, Bi\u0137ernieki, Tuberculosis and Lung Disease Centre, and Latvian Infectious Diseases Centre, along with various specialised centres and clinics. The hospital provides highly specialised inpatient and secondary outpatient healthcare, offering multidisciplinary tertiary-level treatment and care in line with modern technology and medical knowledge. Approximately 80% of all cancer patients in Latvia are treated at the hospital. It serves as a practical training base for both Latvian educational institutions and foreign students, providing further education and knowledge transfer to healthcare specialists within and beyond the country. The hospital engages in scientific research and develops innovative methods for patient treatment. As the third-largest employer in the country, the hospital employs around 5000\u00a0staff members.<\/p>\n
