On 2\u00a0December, the Riga East University Hospital hosted for the first-ever conference for the representatives of the Nordic-Baltic Comprehensive Cancer Centre Network focused on strengthening collaboration and taking joint steps to improve healthcare quality in oncology.<\/p>\n

The conference saw participation from distinguished oncology specialists from all Nordic countries except Iceland, as well as representatives from the Baltic states \u2013 Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia. The event was hosted by Per Magnus M\u00e6hle, Head of the EU Projects Department at Oslo University Hospital. The Riga East University Hospital team was represented by Normunds Sta\u0146\u0113vi\u010ds, Chairman of the Board, and Andrejs P\u010dolkins, head of the Latvian Oncology Centre inpatient facility, who emphasized the hospital\u2019s role in cancer treatment in Latvia and international collaboration.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

In his speech, Normunds Sta\u0146\u0113vi\u010ds<\/strong> pointed out: \u201cThe Riga East University Hospital is recognized as a leader in cancer treatment in Latvia, providing treatment to over 85% of newly diagnosed adult cancer patients in the country every year. Effective guidelines and collaboration in clinical research form the basis for high-quality treatment and care. Our priorities include advancing molecular diagnostics and precision medicine, as well as the secondary use of clinical data for research and quality improvement. However, in light of the high rates of cancer incidence and mortality, it is clear that there is still much to be done.\u201d He also emphasized the need to increase cancer screening coverage in remote regions and strengthen international research collaboration through shared data systems.<\/p>\n

This conference is a crucial step toward achieving the goal of the Europe\u2019s Beating Cancer Plan requiring that 90% of cancer patients in Europe have access to care within the Comprehensive Cancer Centre Network by 2030. Riga East University Hospital has taken up a crucial role in this process, coordinating in Latvia the EUNetCCC project which seeks to address key challenges, including to ensure equal access to cancer care and promoting international data sharing. The achievements of the project will speed up clinical research, advance the development of new therapies, and offer training for the next generation of cancer researchers. Meanwhile, the hospital is actively engaged in assuring implementation of the recommendations of the recently completed DG REFORM project under the Technical Support initiative.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
