The masterclass is to take place on 17\u00a0October\u00a02024 and will include a series of lectures and practical workshops, with multiple case demonstrations and interactive sessions discussing clinical cases. It will be led by Ilze E\u0146\u0123ele, Lead Mammologist of Radiology Department at the East Hospital, and the radiologists Evija Asere and Santa P\u016bre.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The target audience for the breast health masterclass includes radiologists, radiology residents, and qualified professionals involved in breast imaging diagnostics. During the training, radiologists from various countries will enhance their knowledge and practical skills in:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>multimodality breast imaging diagnostics;<\/li>\n<li>breast cancer screening (the internationally widely used BI-RADS system);<\/li>\n<li>detection and understanding of atypical lesions;<\/li>\n<li>strategy in preoperative imaging diagnostics;<\/li>\n<li>clinical application of contrast agents in mammography.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The masterclass will include a series of lectures and practical workshops, with multiple case demonstrations and interactive sessions discussing clinical cases. \u2018Riga Breast School\u2019 will feature experts from Italy, Great Britain, Lithuania, the Netherlands, and Estonia. The masterclass will be conducted by leading specialists from the European Society of Breast Imaging (EUSOBI) and prominent imaging specialists from Latvia, Estonia, and Lithuania. Among the distinguished speakers at the event will be the President of EUSOBI, <strong>Professor Dr.\u00a0Ruud Pijnappel<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Professor Dr.\u00a0Pijnappel<\/em><\/strong><em> is a breast radiologist working in the Radiology Department of the Utrecht University Medical Centre in the Netherlands and is also an expert at the National Expert and Training Centre for Breast Cancer Screening. In 2002,<strong> Professor Dr. R.\u00a0Pijnappel<\/strong> defended his doctoral dissertation \u2018The Diagnosis of Non-Palpable Breast Lesions\u2019.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Since 1996, the professor\u2019s primary clinical and research interests have been related to breast imaging. He also provides training for residents and interns in multidisciplinary breast diagnostics and is an internationally recognized lecturer. Since October\u00a02015, he has been a professor of breast radiology at Utrecht University. Additionally, he serves as the general secretary and board member of several national and international working groups focused on breast cancer diagnosis and treatment research. Apart from being a member of the Netherlands Radiological Society, he is also a member of the European Society of Radiology (ESR), the Society of Breast Imaging (SBI), and EUSOBI.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The lecturer for \u2018Riga Breast School\u2019, Professor <strong>Dr.\u00a0Maria Adele Marino<\/strong>, is a European Council-certified breast imaging specialist representing the Department of Biomedical Sciences, Morphological and Functional Imaging at the University of Messina in Italy.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Breast cancer poses a significant health burden for women worldwide. According to data from the European Cancer Information System (ECIS), in 2022, breast cancer was diagnosed in 374\u00a0800 women across EU\u00a0countries, while 95\u00a0000 women died from the disease.<\/p>\n<p>An organized breast cancer screening programme has proven effective in reducing breast cancer mortality by approximately 40% among women who participated in the screening. A quality-assured screening programme allows for earlier diagnosis, the use of less aggressive treatment methods, improved quality of life, and reduced mortality. The hospital consists of five inpatient facilities\u00a0\u2013 Gai\u013cezers, Latvian Oncology Centre, Bi\u0137ernieki, Tuberculosis and Lung Disease Centre, and Latvian Infectious Diseases Centre, along with various specialised centres and clinics. Approximately 80% of all cancer patients in Latvia are treated at the hospital.
